Requirement to install individual meters

Since August 2008, it has been mandatory to install individual electricity and gas meters in all new residential units or those undergoing major renovations in the Walloon Region.

For apartment buildings constructed before August 2008 that have not undergone such renovations since that date, the law provides for a transition period to bring them into compliance, with this period ending on December 31, 2023.

Consequently, as of January 1, 2024, all residential units must be equipped with an individual electricity meter and, where applicable, an individual gas meter.Owners of apartment buildings who have not yet installed these meters are required to do so at their own expense by contacting the distribution network operator.
